After only two days of fundraising, champion marathoner Soh Rui Yong has earned about S$42,000 from the general public.
So far, 360 people have contributed money.
The funds will be used to compensate fellow marathoner Ashley Liew, who successfully sued Soh for defamation.
Dealing With Hardship, Not Much Money On Hand
Soh claims that he has resorted to appealing to the public for assistance because he does not have much money on hand.
He claimed he was pushed to seek public assistance because Liew’s lawyers are demanding that the full amount be paid immediately, as well as an additional S$100,000 in legal costs for work done, notwithstanding Soh’s determination to appeal the ruling.
Soh also stated in a Facebook message that a request for mediation with Liew was denied.
Soh had written a day earlier that he had raised more than S$26,000 in just one day of fundraising.
He was able to raise around a fourth of his goal in just two days.
Soh’s original fundraising message was backed by a promise to donors.
Given that he is appealing the verdict, he stated that he will return the donated funds if he is successful in overturning the unfavorable ruling during the appeal process, an outcome he is confident of achieving after speaking with “a number of legal experts, both from within and outside” his legal team.
