Former ustaz accused of indecent acts on boy at mosque

A former Islamic religious teacher, is facing charges for allegedly committing indecent acts on a boy at a mosque in 2014.

According to Straits Times report, the man, whose identity cannot be disclosed due to a gag order to protect the boy’s identity, is facing two charges under the Children and Young Persons Act.

The alleged incidents took place in 2014, when the boy was around 15 years old.

Court documents state that the man allegedly touched the boy’s private parts over his clothes on one occasion and with skin-to-skin contact on another.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) confirmed that the man is no longer registered under the Asatizah Recognition Scheme, Muis’ accreditation scheme for religious teachers.

In response to queries from ST, Muis spokesperson stated that this decision was made following a thorough review and assessment by the Asatizah Recognition Board.

The case has been adjourned to July 18.

A first-time offender may face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000 for each count of the crime committed. For repeat offenders, the maximum penalties increase to seven years in jail and a fine of up to $20,000 for each count.
