Muhammad Nur Ikhlas Mohd Hashim, a 26-year-old part-time tuition teacher, pleaded guilty today to three charges of molesting his male students, aged under 14, during private tutoring sessions held at their homes.
Two additional charges will be taken into consideration during the sentencing on January 16, according to the report.
Nur Ikhlas, a student at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, worked as a part-time private tutor, earning between S$2,000 and S$3,000 per month. Between 2021 and 2023, he took advantage of his role as a tutor to carry out his heinous acts, touching the private parts of three underage boys while they were working on school assignments in their bedrooms.
FIRST VICTIM
The court heard that one mother engaged Nur Ikhlas to tutor her 13-year-old son in science sometime in early 2021. During one lesson in June 2021, Nur Ikhlas began touching the boy inappropriately without his consent. Despite the victim’s silence, the tutor continued his actions.
“The boy did not know how to react and remained silent. After helping him with some science questions, Nur Ikhlas touched him in the same area for a second time’ according to report.
Shockingly, the boy continued having lessons with Nur Ikhlas until the end of December 2022, when his mother decided to discontinue his services due to his lack of academic improvement.
SECOND VICTIM
In a separate case, another mother hired Nur Ikhlas to tutor her eight-year-old son in mathematics in October 2022. Over time, she noticed the tutor’s inappropriate behavior, including rubbing her son’s back and using his finger to poke his body.
Between January and February of 2023, Nur Ikhlas escalated his actions by sitting the boy on his lap and rubbing his back, aiming to create an atmosphere of normalized physical contact.
On February 26, 2023, Nur Ikhlas went further by swiping his hand over the boy’s private part multiple times during a tuition session. The court documents revealed that the boy was shocked and unsure of what actions to take, so he chose to stay silent and carry on with his schoolwork. Subsequently, Nur Ikhlas proceeded to purposefully stroke the boy’s private area two additional times before resuming his teaching as if nothing had occurred.
Once the tuition class concluded, the boy promptly informed his mother, who promptly dismissed the tutor’s services on that very day, the report added.
THIRD VICTIM
According to court records, Nur Ikhlas had been providing tuition lessons to another 13-year-old boy since March 2022. It was during one of these lessons that he molested the student, prompting the victim to confide in his mother about the incident. After discussing the matter as a family, they decided to file a police report, with the boy’s older sister completing the task on April 3 of the following year.
The court proceedings revealed that Nur Ikhlas would typically visit the boy’s house on Sundays to teach math and science, and while in a closed bedroom, he would repeatedly caress the boy’s thigh. On March 26, the accused used his fingers to touch the boy’s private area, causing the victim to move away in shock. Nur Ikhlas then pretended as if nothing had happened, only to repeat his actions later, stopping only when the victim distanced himself. Initially hesitant to share the tutor’s misconduct with his family, the boy eventually disclosed the incidents to his mother.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Claire Poh argued that Nur Ikhlas had abused the trust placed in him as a tutor and that the molestations had taken place within the sanctity of the victims’ homes. Poh further emphasized that the acts of molestation were an escalation from previous bodily contacts Nur Ikhlas had with the victims.
Defense counsel Narendra Mudaliar, representing Nur Ikhlas, sought a jail term of 20 months with three strokes of the cane, highlighting his client’s deep remorse for his actions and desire to reform himself. Nur Ikhlas faces a potential jail term of up to five years, along with a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties for each charge of using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a person under 14 years of age.
The court will announce the sentencing on January 16, which will take into consideration the gravity of the offenses committed by Nur Ikhlas Mohd Hashim.
