A 25-year-old domestic helper, Junny Lal Awn Pui, has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty following the death of her employer’s dog, a male poodle named “Boyboy.”
The charges, filed on August 27, stem from a disturbing series of incidents that reportedly took place on January 22.
According to Straits Times, the charges accuse her of abusing a 13-year-old male brown poodle named “Boyboy” on Jan 22 between 9.50am and 11.45am.
According to CNA, Pui, a Myanmar national, is facing four charges under the Animals and Birds Act for her treatment of Boyboy. The allegations indicate that Pui physically assaulted the dog, striking it multiple times and using a makeshift stick fashioned from rolled papers.

Surveillance footage presented in court revealed the shocking treatment of the pet, which had been under Pui’s care for approximately three to four weeks while its owners were at work.
DETAILS OF THE CASE
On the day of the incident, Pui allegedly grabbed Boyboy by the neck and pinned the dog to the ground, striking its head three times. She purportedly compounded the suffering by placing her leg on the poodle and bearing her weight on it while attempting to bandage the dog. Further accusations include hanging Boyboy from the balcony railing by its harness and forcefully beating it on the head again shortly before the dog succumbed to its injuries.
Following the alleged abuse, Boyboy died later that day, although the charge sheets did not include a direct mention of the dog’s death. The case came to light when the dog’s owner, after being informed of the tragic news, reviewed the surveillance camera footage and discovered the horrifying treatment Boyboy had endured. He immediately alerted the authorities.
Pui appeared in court via video link, communicating through an interpreter. She expressed her intention to plead guilty to three charges, while contesting the charge of hanging Boyboy, claiming her employer instructed her to do so, the report added.
She is currently unrepresented and is seeking legal aid.
Her bail has been set at S$15,000, though she indicated that she might have difficulty securing a bailor.
Derrick Tan, president of the charity Voice for Animals, shared the related CCTV footage on social media, drawing attention to the case, which has sparked widespread concern over animal welfare.
If found guilty, Pui faces severe consequences, including a potential prison sentence of up to 18 months, fines amounting to S$15,000, or both.
The case is scheduled to return to court in September as the legal proceedings continue.
