According to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), a 45-year-old man who was seen using an e-vaporiser in an MRT train has been identified and enforcement action has been taken against him.
On February 14, 2023, HSA was made aware of a STOMP article that featured video of a man using an e-vaporizer inside an MRT train.
FOUND ON STREETS
“On 22 Feb, HSA conducted a check at his residence. The 45-year-old Chinese man claimed that the e-vaporiser he used was a discarded e-vaporiser found on the streets and he has since thrown it away. After further investigations, he was issued with a composition fine for the illegal use of an e-vaporiser”, HSA said in its press release.
It did not how much was the fine.
According to SMRT, the event happened on February 4 at about 11.30 p.m. on the East-West Line.
In response to the queries from CNA, Mr. Lam Sheau Kai, president of SMRT Trains, stated that “Our staff at Simei MRT station received a report of a male commuter vaping in the train travelling towards Pasir Ris. Upon notification, we immediately checked with staff from other stations and examined CCTV footage for the man”.
“HSA takes a very serious view of the possession and use of banned e-vaporisers and related items and will take stern actions against any individuals who contravene the law”, HSA added.
The Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act forbids the buying, possession, and use of e-vaporizers in Singapore. This includes purchases made from overseas and over the Internet. The maximum punishment for offenders is $2,000.
