A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 12 days’ jail on Wednesday (Jan 28) after showing a lewd pre-written note on his mobile phone to a teenage girl on an MRT train.
Tan Tee Yong, a Singaporean, pleaded guilty to one charge of insulting the modesty of a 16-year-old girl. A second similar charge involving another teenage girl on the same MRT line was taken into consideration for sentencing, according to Channel News Asia.
The court heard that the victim, a polytechnic student, boarded a Thomson-East Coast Line train at Outram MRT station on the morning of Apr 30, 2024, heading towards Woodlands North.
At about 7.50am, Tan boarded the same train at Caldecott MRT station and sat next to her. He then took out his mobile phone and displayed a note he had saved previously, which contained phrases such as “I like you”, “Will you be with me?”, “Hold my hand”, as well as a lewd statement.
After seeing the message, the victim moved away from Tan. He later alighted at Springleaf MRT station. The victim subsequently informed station staff and lodged a police report.
The prosecution sought between 12 and 17 days’ jail, citing aggravating factors including the public transport setting and the victim’s young age. Tan had no prior convictions.
In mitigation, Tan’s lawyer said his client knew his actions were wrong but did not realise the seriousness of the offence.
For insulting a person’s modesty, an offender can be jailed for up to one year, fined, or both.
