An investigation has been launched into the death of a pet dog that allegedly died at a grooming salon after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The National Parks Board (NParks) confirmed that it is looking into the matter involving the dog, named Fendi, who reportedly died on July 24.
According to Straits Times report, Jessica Kwok, the group director for enforcement and investigation at the National Parks Board (NParks), stated that the board was informed that “a dog allegedly died at a grooming salon and is investigating the matter”.
The disturbing video, shared on Instagram sgfollowsall.backup, shows six dogs in a room barking after being startled by something off-camera.
The video was reshared on reddit & other social media platforms as well.
As the footage unfolds, a brown dog, Fendi, is seen tied to a table by a leash.
At approximately 1:42 PM, the dog falls off the table and struggles for about a minute to regain its footing before becoming motionless. The timestamp visible in the video captures this tragic moment.
Fendi had not moved for approximately 30 minutes as per the time stamp on the Footage. At 2:19 PM, the second employee began administering chest compressions on Fendi. One minute later, at 2:20 PM, the first employee wrapped a towel around Fendi before carrying it outside.
Fendi’s owner, Sonia Tan, 24, was notified of her pet’s death at approximately 3:14 PM by the grooming salon, after they reportedly rushed the dog to a veterinary clinic.
In an interview with ST, Tan expressed her heartbreak, stating, “Fendi was my first ever dog and baby. I don’t think I can or ever will get over this. She would have turned four in August.”
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) reported that it was alerted to the incident by concerned members of the public and has subsequently informed the authorities. The SPCA affirmed that Tan has also reported the grooming salon involved in the incident.
Pawkins SG, the home-based grooming salon where the incident occurred, released a statement on its Instagram account expressing its sorrow over Fendi’s tragic death.
The salon stated that it had cared for the dog for about two years and expressed its condolences to all who loved and cared for Fendi. “We sincerely hope that all those who loved and cared for Fendi can accept our deepest and most heartfelt condolences and sympathies,” the post read.
Sonia shared with Mothership that she received the heartbreaking news about Fendi’s passing at 3:14 PM. One of the owners of Pawkins SG reached out to her, informing her that Fendi had been found unconscious. In a desperate attempt to save him, CPR was performed while he was rushed to the vet.
Sonia expressed her concern about the situation, noting that her other dog, Hades, had also been left leashed on the grooming table during the incident, but thankfully, he was unharmed.
She reflected on her long-standing relationship with the groomer, having visited them since June 14, 2022, and stated that she had never encountered any issues prior to this tragic event.
Following the incident, Sonia reported it to the police, who connected her with the National Parks Board (NParks).
Reflecting on her loss, she said, “Fendi was my first ever dog, I don’t think I will ever get over this.”
Determined to make a difference, Sonia vowed to raise awareness about the issue, ensuring that the Animal & Veterinary Service, NParks, and the Singapore Kennel Club are informed about the recent deaths of multiple dogs attributed to groomer negligence, urging them to take action.
In response to the incident, NParks informed CNA on Thursday that it values all public feedback regarding animal health and welfare.
“NParks has received feedback on a case where a dog allegedly died at a grooming salon and is investigating the matter,” it added.
