WHAT HAPPENED :
According to the report, Syafiq was a corporal working as a staff assistant at the Support and Technical Branch of the Protective Security Command base in Ulu Pandan Road.
On August 6, 2024, he was in the office when he noticed a set of AirPods belonging to a 37-year-old station inspector who had stepped out briefly.
Syafiq took the AirPods, concealed them in his bag, and left the base around 6pm.
The station inspector returned shortly after and discovered the AirPods missing. He activated the device’s tracking function and discovered it was moving along Lornie Road.
Later that evening, at about 7.24pm, the AirPods were located in a block of flats on Sin Ming Avenue, where Syafiq resided.
The inspector informed Syafiq’s supervisor, a senior staff sergeant. The following morning, at around 9am, the inspector re-activated the AirPods’ tracking and found them back in the Support and Technical Branch office.
A search revealed the AirPods in Syafiq’s bag.
Confronted with the evidence, Syafiq admitted to stealing the AirPods, citing faulty earphones and a lack of funds to buy a new pair as his reasons. He stated he intended to use the AirPods to listen to music.
Syafiq, who was unrepresented by a lawyer, told the court he is currently unemployed and undergoing a crane course. He pleaded for a second chance and requested a warning instead of imprisonment.
Under Singapore law, theft can carry a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment and a fine.
The court sentenced Syafiq to one week’s jail, with the second theft charge remaining as a consideration during sentencing.
