In a disturbing incident that unfolded last year, a 42-year-old Singaporean man has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to threatening his pregnant wife and their six-year-old son.
According to Today’s report, the man, whose name has been withheld to protect the identities of the children involved, also verbally threatened his wife and engaged in destructive behavior within their home.
DEROGATORY REMARKS
The incident took place on the evening of July 27, 2022.
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Bryont Chin, the man confronted his wife, who was in her third trimester of pregnancy, about taking a loan from a licensed moneylender. The argument escalated, and the man resorted to threatening his wife, stating that he intended to force her into prostitution. He also claimed that their family was at risk of being targeted by individuals sent by the moneylender.
Additionally, during the altercation, the man verbally berated his wife with demeaning and derogatory remarks. He told her, “I want to bring you to Geylang to be a prostitute. You are no different from the prostitute in Geylang. Do you know that they are coming to attack our family in two lorries because of what you’ve done?” These hurtful and manipulative statements further added to the distress experienced by his wife, compounding the gravity of his actions.
ATTACKED WITH KNIVES
The situation deteriorated when the man armed himself with knives, brandishing them in a menacing manner towards his wife and their older son. He proceeded to make stabbing motions toward a sofa and a table. In an attempt to protect her children from further harm, the wife retreated to their bedroom with their two sons. The whereabouts of their daughter during the altercation remain unknown.
During this period, the man’s anger intensified, and he grabbed porcelain plates, throwing them forcefully at a wall. The commotion caught the attention of the man’s mother, who was also present in the household. She intervened and attempted to calm the situation. However, the wife, fearing for her safety, hid behind her children’s bedroom cupboard and managed to contact emergency services via 999.
Upon receiving the distress call, the police promptly arrived at the scene. They discovered that the wife had sustained a minor injury to her little finger while clearing the broken plates. An ambulance was called to provide medical assistance. The man was subsequently arrested on the same day for criminal intimidation.
PLEADED GUILTY
During the court proceedings, the man initially pleaded not guilty, but later changed his plea to guilty. This change of heart raised concerns about his level of remorse. In light of these circumstances, District Judge Wong Li Tein upheld the prosecution’s arguments, acknowledging the distress caused by the man’s actions and their intent to create fear in his wife and young child. The judge sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.
The defense lawyer, Dhillon Surinder Singh, representing the man, contended that the incident was an isolated occurrence and urged the court to consider the importance of the father’s role in raising the children. However, the court sided with the prosecution, emphasizing the gravity of the offense and the need for sufficient deterrence.
The man faced charges of threatening to cause grievous hurt, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
