A 38-year-old woman has been arrested following a road accident in Chinatown that claimed the life of a six-year-old girl, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in an update on Sunday, Feb 8.
Police said the woman was arrested on the day of the incident, Feb 6, for driving without reasonable consideration causing death. Investigations are ongoing.
The accident occurred at around 11.50am along South Bridge Road, near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Two pedestrians—a six-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman—were injured in the incident and taken conscious to hospital. The child later died from her injuries.
According to Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao, the victims were a mother and daughter from Indonesia who were visiting Singapore.
The report added that the accident took place at a carpark next to the temple, where the car was believed to have been exiting when it struck the pedestrians.
Photos and videos of the aftermath circulated on social media, including on the SingaporeRaw reddit community.
The footage showed members of the public rendering assistance, with one man carrying the injured child while others sheltered the victims from the sun using uumbrellas
A woman can be heard in one video confirming that an ambulance had been called.
Earlier, police said the driver involved was assisting with investigations before the arrest was made.
