Woman Charged Over Spitting Water at Commuters on MRT Train

A 37-year-old woman was charged on Wednesday (Jan 28) with public nuisance after a video showing her spitting water at people on an MRT train went viral online.

Sabrina Han Meizhen, a Singaporean, is accused of spitting water at a person named Ng Siew Hiang and directing water at members of the public while on a train at Choa Chu Kang MRT Station at about 8am on Jan 16. Her actions allegedly caused annoyance to both the victim and other commuters, according to Channel News Asia.

Han was remanded and appeared in court via video link, wearing a shirt similar to the one seen in the viral video and a face mask.

The prosecution requested that she be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric observation.

The judge ordered Han to be remanded at IMH for two weeks. When Han asked if she could be released on bail, the judge replied: “Not for the time being. After the two weeks we will review the situation”.

Han nodded to indicate that she understood and told the court: “I would like to say that I am remorseful and I will control my anxiety attack and not do it again.”

The viral video, posted on Instagram and captioned “Lady helping to clean the train,” shows Han drinking from a bottle and spitting water in the direction of commuters while standing on a visibly wet train floor.

Other passengers are seen keeping their distance, with some crowding near the edge of the cabin.

At one point, a woman appears to struggle with Han in an attempt to take the bottle from her.
If convicted of public nuisance, Han could be fined up to S$2,000.

If it is proven that she knew her actions would likely cause public annoyance, or if she is a repeat offender, she could face up to three months’ jail, a fine of up to S$2,000, or both.
