A British national, Jonathan David Lowe, aged 43, was sentenced to six weeks in jail and fined $1,000 on Oct 17 after pleading guilty to charges of public nuisance and voluntarily causing hurt at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) on September 21.

The court noted that four additional charges of assaulting other individuals were considered during sentencing, according to Straits Times.

The incident unfolded on the evening of September 21, during Lowe’s visit to Singapore for the Formula One race.

Lowe is a director of a firm named Keylon Interiors according to the report.

After consuming two cups of whisky at the rooftop bar of MBS with clients and colleagues, Lowe became increasingly aggressive.

CCTV footage presented in court captured Lowe’s erratic behavior in a hotel lift around 10:40 PM, where he unexpectedly began slapping and punching four men.

Despite attempts by the others to restrain him, the assaults escalated before the lift doors opened, allowing the men to escape.

Shortly thereafter, Lowe made his way to the B2 lift lobby and, in a fit of rage, pulled an orchid plant out of its pot and hurled the empty pot into another lift.

As he traveled up to the fourth floor, he planned to further throw the pot but halted when spotting a member of the public. Instead, Lowe dropped the flowerpot on the floor and walked away, the report added.

At 11:12 PM when Lowe confronted Mr. Ng Se Li, a 28-year-old assistant manager at MBS. Without any warning, Lowe launched a series of punches at Mr. Ng, striking his head repeatedly and stomping on him as he tried to regain his footing.

Following the brutal altercation, Mr. Ng was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a head injury that required seven days of hospitalization.

During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhou Yang characterized Lowe’s attack as unprovoked and described his assault on Mr. Ng as “brutal.”

The prosecution underlined the seriousness of the victim’s condition, noting he had to be kept under medical observation overnight.

In Lowe’s defense, his lawyer, Mr. Kalidass Murugaiyan, referenced testimonials of his client’s good character and claimed the incident was out of character for him. He pleaded for a non-custodial sentence, describing the violent outburst as a “one-off incident.”

Mr. Kalidass further mentioned that Lowe had expressed remorse and sought to compensate Mr. Ng for his injuries.

Mr. Kalidass stated that his client was “preplexed” by his actions and even underwent a CT scan to determine whether they were connected to a previous head injury. However, it was ultimately determined that the injury was unrelated to the offenses.

The lawyer noted that Lowe expressed remorse and has proposed compensation to the victim.
