An Australian man who went on a shoplifting spree while waiting for his flight to the Maldives at Changi Airport was sentenced to 10 days in jail on October 31.
Aaron Gary Slater, 45, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft after stealing almost $3,500 worth of merchandise from several stores in Terminal 2.
According to ST, the offences occurred on September 2 while Slater was in transit from Melbourne. Around 7.30pm that evening, he entered Tumi, a travel products store, where he took a blue Tumi luggage bag valued at $1,045 and left without paying. His actions were recorded on the store’s CCTV system.
Later that night, Slater continued stealing from other retail outlets. His stolen items included one pink Victoria’s Secret pyjamas set worth $113, two pairs of Oakley sunglasses valued at more than $340 each, one pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses priced at $365, a brown Adidas bag worth $81, and a Starbucks tumbler priced at $52. He also took a luggage tag, five bracelets, and a black Hard Rock Café cap.
Slater’s thefts were uncovered when a sales assistant from the Ray-Ban outlet alerted airport security after noticing a missing item. Security officers located Slater in the departure transit area and recovered all the stolen goods from him.
Further investigations revealed that Slater had also committed theft earlier on July 28, during another Singapore transit. On that occasion, he removed a black Tumi sling bag worth more than $600 from a display shelf but was stopped by a store employee who managed to retrieve the item. No police report was filed at that time.
In mitigation, defence lawyer Tania Chin requested a three-day jail sentence, highlighting that her client had been stranded in Singapore without family support and unable to work since his arrest.
Under Singapore law, theft in dwelling carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine.
