A 42-year-old man, Xu Shunbo, a Chinese national is facing serious legal consequences after allegedly attempting to bribe two police officers in a bid to evade enforcement action for littering—a minor offense that typically results in a fine.
Xu has been charged with two counts of graft after reportedly offering a total of $300 in bribes to Senior Staff Sergeant Muhammad Shammer Mohamed Hassan and Sergeant 1 Kevin Vengatesh.
According to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), the alleged bribery incident took place on November 13, when Xu attempted to offer $150 to each officer.
Both officers rejected the offers, leading to the current charges against Xu, according to ST report.
The CPIB has not disclosed the specific location where the alleged offenses occurred.
If convicted, Xu, a Chinese national, could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison and fines of up to $100,000 for each graft charge.
Xu’s case is scheduled for a court mention on January 2, 2025, where further legal proceedings will be determined.
