In a bizarre incident, a father was caught stealing 55 plush toys from a claw machine after his three children expressed their frustration over not winning any prizes.
The 39-year-old defendant, Faz, was sentenced to one week and three days in jail after being found guilty of stealing 55 toys.
WHAT HAPPENED
The incident occurred on January 6, when Faz took his children to the Sembawang Shopping Centre.
Around 8 PM, the family entered a claw machine arcade. Faz was pushing a shopping cart at the time, and the children complained that they had played several rounds on different machines without winning any toys.
Observing the claw machines, Faz decided to take matters into his own hands. He lifted one of the machines and tilted it backward, causing numerous toys to spill out into the collection area. Faz and his children then gathered the toys, repeating the process until they had amassed a total of 55 toys valued at approximately S$300.
After stuffing the stolen toys into a plastic bag in the shopping cart, the family left the arcade. It wasn’t until 10:55 PM that the store’s executive director discovered the claw machine was empty and, upon reviewing the surveillance footage, alerted the police.
Authorities identified Faz a few days later, on January 10, and recovered the stolen toys.
In addition to the claw machine incident, Faz faced charges related to another theft that occurred on February 7. He had taken a blue and a brown shirt from a clothing store, but when he exited the fitting room, he only carried the brown shirt. At the checkout, he falsely claimed to have already purchased the brown shirt and paid for the blue one, evading the store’s security system by removing the RFID tag.
Faz was ultimately sentenced by the judge on December 2 to one week and three days in jail.
