A 46-year-old American man was taken into custody on Tuesday (Dec 9) after he allegedly molested a young child in the departure transit area of Changi Airport.
According to a police news release, preliminary findings showed that the man purportedly molested a six-year-old girl at around 4.55pm on Tuesday. The child had been asleep on a bench next to her mother in the departure transit area of Terminal 3.
“When the girl’s mother woke up and noticed the man’s presence and actions, she immediately confronted him. The man then walked away from the scene. The girl’s mother subsequently alerted the police,” the police said on Wednesday.
With assistance from CCTV footage, officers from the Airport Police Division identified the suspect and arrested him within four hours of the report being lodged.
He is expected to be charged in court on Thursday with using criminal force on a person with the intent to outrage modesty.
The offence carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine, caning, or any combination of these punishments.
