ICA Catches Man Attempting to Help Friend Leave Singapore Illegally

A 34-year-old Malaysian man, Ahmad Naqib Adenauer, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to abetting his childhood friend, Mohammad Fakaruddin Mohd Rosli, in attempting to illegally leave Singapore.

The incident occurred in June when Naqib drove a lorry into Singapore from Malaysia and later helped Fakaruddin hide in the cargo compartment to evade immigration checks.

According to Straits Times, Naqib entered Singapore on June 12 without stating his purpose.

During his stay, Fakaruddin, 31, contacted him, claiming he was under investigation by the Health Sciences Authority and could not leave the country as his passport was impounded.

Fakaruddin expressed a desire to return to Malaysia due to homesickness and pleaded for Naqib’s assistance.

Although Naqib initially refused, he eventually took pity on his friend, who had been under investigation for smuggling a large quantity of vaping products into Singapore, the report added.

Fakaruddin’s attempt to escape involved hiding in the cargo compartment of Naqib’s lorry while heading back to Malaysia.

Their plan was foiled when officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) stopped and inspected the vehicle at Tuas Checkpoint. Naqib was not motivated by financial gain but was driven by compassion for his long-time friend.

The ICA emphasized its firm stance against illegal entry and abetment, warning that those caught aiding others could face up to two years’ jail and a fine of up to $6,000.

Fakaruddin faces multiple charges, including importing thousands of vape products—8,400 vape pods, 4,430 disposable vapes, 350 vape device boxes, and 1,150 vape cartridges—and failing to produce his passport.

He is scheduled to return to court on September 11, the reort added.
