The picture of a group of young kids smoking cannabis from a bamboo pipe at the Pattaya fish market is making rounds on social media.
The post went viral on various social media platforms after it was shared on Facebook by Krittiwat Matrong.
“The kids were 9 and 10 years old, according to Krittiwat, and they were homeless and had no parents. An unidentified 25-year-old man was with them, chopping cannabis and handing it over to the kids to conveniently smoke from a bamboo bong, Krittiwat stated in his post according to the pattaya news.
At first, Krittiwat thought the children were just playing, but as he approached them he realised the boys were smoking marijuana.
“Krittiwat approached the children and asked them their ages to discover they were only 9-10 years old. When Krittiwat asked where their parents were, they told him that they didn’t have any parents”.
However, when Krittiwat warned them that they are too young to smoke Cannabis, one of the children said, “I’m not scared of you. My dad is a soldier”, according to thethaiger.
The man wrote on Facebook, “Look how far we have come, 9 and 10 years old kids are smoking cannabis nowadays. What is happening to our society? What are the authorities doing?…”
According to the latest update, Pattaya police found the kids sleeping on the beach around noon on December 2nd, and took them to Banglamung Hospital.
As per the reports, the children fled the homeless children’s centre according to the police. The two children would be returned to the centre once more, but this time, relevant officials would carefully watch them.
The children’s centre director in Chonburi, Natthamon Kijdamrongkul, claimed that the children ran away from the facility because of their actions. She made an attempt to inquire about the source of the cannabis, but they refused to answer.
The kids also had a pet dog, which seemed to be their best friend. The dog was allowed to go with them, according to media reports.
In June, Thailand removed cannabis from its list of illegal drugs so that people could benefit from its therapeutic benefits. However, little to no laws to regulate marijuana usage — or to prevent young children from taking cannabis — was enacted without much advance thought.
Cannabis cannot be purchased or used by anybody under the age of twenty. However, it should come as no surprise that the group of young children in the pictures were able to obtain some cannabis given how easily it can be acquired thanks to street vendors and vans.
HEALTH MINISTER RESPONDS
Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s minister of public health, stated that he thinks that the smoking of marijuana by young boys in Pattaya was staged in order to attack the Bhumjaithai Party and its position on decriminalising cannabis and hemp.
In response to a picture Minister Anutin said he wondered how a 9-year-old boy could afford to buy the pipe and the marijuana, thinking that the scene was staged.
A 10-year-old boy was returned to a child care centre in Chon Buri Province by Pattaya police and a social worker. The boy lived at the centre, after he was sent there by his grandmother to learn some discipline, but he escaped and joined other street children in Pattaya, according to other media reports.
