A 40-year-old former officer from the Singapore Police Force has pleaded guilty to multiple serious sexual offences involving minors, including molestation and the creation of exploitative recordings.
According to Straits Times, Sharizal Shafi’ee entered his plea on March 24, admitting to five charges. These include molesting a 15-year-old boy and recording explicit acts involving two other teenage victims.
An additional ten charges, linked to offences involving at least three more victims, will be considered during sentencing scheduled for April 21.
A gag order remains in place to protect the identities of the victims.
According to court proceedings, the incident of molestation occurred on April 18, 2024. Sharizal had disguised himself as a woman, wearing makeup and female clothing, before positioning himself near the back gate of a secondary school. He approached multiple students under the pretext of needing assistance to adjust his bra.
After being turned down twice, he eventually convinced a 15-year-old boy to help him, ST report added.
Sharizal then led the student to a staircase landing in a nearby public housing block, located between the ninth and 10th floors.
While demonstrating how to assist him, he began grinding against the boy and reached behind to touch him inappropriately. It was not disclosed when a police report was filed, but he was arrested on April 28, 2024, ten days after the incident, following investigations.
Forensic analysis of Sharizal’s mobile phone uncovered at least 32 recordings of men performing sexual acts.
Investigators revealed that he had posed as a woman online to befriend victims and manipulate them into engaging in explicit video calls. In one case from 2023, he befriended a 15-year-old boy and persuaded him to perform a sexual act during a video call, which he secretly recorded. The footage lasted over 12 minutes.
He repeated a similar scheme in April 2024 with another teenage boy, again recording explicit content exceeding 12 minutes in duration.
Prosecutors emphasized the gravity of his actions, noting that he recorded a total of 36 individuals, including four minors.“He had secretly recorded a total of 36 individuals, including four children, engaging in sexual acts.
During this period, he also physically acted on his criminal impulses,” the prosecution stated.
In mitigation, Sharizal’s lawyer argued that he had demonstrated genuine remorse and had begun taking steps toward rehabilitation. The defence also highlighted his previously clean record and a 17-year career in the police force, during which he received multiple commendations.
The Singapore Police Force confirmed earlier that Sharizal had been removed from frontline duties before resigning on June 16, 2024.
Under Singapore law, offences such as outrage of modesty can result in up to three years’ imprisonment, fines, caning, or a combination of these penalties.
Charges related to procuring indecent acts from individuals under 16 carry penalties of up to five years in jail, fines of up to $10,000, or both.
For producing child abuse material, offenders may face up to 10 years’ imprisonment, along with possible fines and caning.
Sentencing will take place on April 21.
