A 38-year-old man has been charged over the alleged armed abduction of a 19-year-old man following a car rental dispute that ended in a police pursuit and crash in Woodlands.
According to Straits Times report, Mashahri Mazlan allegedly confronted the victim at about 1.55am on Aug. 4 outside Block 104B Canberra Street. Prosecutors said he used a knife to threaten the 19-year-old and force him into a vehicle.
Mashahri also faces a separate charge of possessing a parang measuring about 43cm in length. Police allege he brandished the weapon and ordered the victim to sit in the front passenger seat, while another male suspect sat in the rear of the vehicle.
The group allegedly drove from Canberra Street to 43 Admiralty Road West before heading towards the junction of Woodlands Avenue 7 and Woodlands Avenue 10.
Police said the victim had been confronted by a group comprising Mashahri, another man and two women over a dispute involving a rented car. Officers from the Woodlands Police Division later spotted the vehicle, but the driver allegedly sped away instead of stopping, triggering a police pursuit.
The chase came to an end when the vehicle crashed into a lamppost at the junction of Woodlands Avenue 7 and Woodlands Avenue 10.
Mashahri was arrested at the scene, and officers recovered the alleged 43cm-long parang from his possession. The three other occupants fled after the crash but were later arrested through follow-up investigations. They include a 36-year-old man and two women aged 30 and 38.
Police investigations into the three suspects are ongoing.
Mashahri has been remanded in custody to allow investigators to complete their inquiries. He is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 12.
Under Singapore law, a person convicted of abduction may face up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, caning, or any combination of these penalties.
