Singaporean Amos Yee, 25, has been apprehended and taken into custody by the Illinois Department of Corrections in the United States. Yee’s latest detention comes just a month after he was released on parole, serving only half of his jail term.
The victim notification network relayed this news, stating that Yee was admitted to the Stateville Correctional Center, a maximum security prison located in Crest Hill, Illinois. The reasons behind his detainment have yet to be disclosed, and inquiries have been made to the Illinois Department of Corrections for further clarification.
Yee received parole on October 7, after serving approximately three years of his initial six-year sentence. He was imprisoned for grooming a teenage girl online and pressuring her into sharing explicit photographs. Classified as a sex offender, Yee was released under undisclosed parole conditions.
A reporter named Wali Khan from US posted about the news on X platform & shared Amos’s new mugshots & the screenshot of Message alert confirming his re arrest.
VIRAL REDDIT POST
In another confirmation Reddit User SweatyToothedMadman8 revealed on Singaporean Sub reddit r/singaporeraw that he got a text from the prison authorities that Amos has been rearrested.
According to the reddit user who claimed to be his mentor & had a similar backstory to Amos Yee, said that Amos was handcuffed by police officers.
The redditor called Amos’ house and spoke to his housemate, who witnessed Amos being handcuffed by police officers upon returning from the store. When the housemate asked for an explanation, nobody provided any information and they proceeded with the arrest, taking all of Amos’ belongings as well.
The redditor speculates that someone from Singapore “may” have alerted in Illinois about Amos’ online activities, particularly his intention to reoffend mentioned in his latest blog post.
While this action may not be a direct violation of parole, it likely violates the conditions regarding internet usage. The redditor ends by mentioning that those waiting for Amos’ return will have to wait until at least October 2026.
Previously, on December 3, 2021, Yee pleaded guilty to charges of grooming and possessing child pornography. Sixteen additional charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement. The court heard how Yee had developed an online relationship with a 14-year-old girl, coercing her into sharing explicit photos of herself. Despite her repeatedly disclosing her age, Yee continued to engage in explicit conversations and encourage her to partake in sexual fantasies.
Following his arrest in October 2020 at his Chicago apartment, Yee’s charges eventually led him to plead guilty after reaching a plea deal. However, the conditions of his asylum status and the possibility of deportation to Singapore remain uncertain. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to comment on the matter, citing privacy concerns.
In 2015, Yee gained asylum in the United States from a US immigration court, despite opposition from the Department of Homeland Security. His initial prison sentence in Singapore was served for making derogatory remarks about Christians, and he incurred a subsequent conviction for making similar offensive statements about both Christians and Muslims.
As the situation continues to unfold, many await further updates regarding Yee’s custody status and future legal proceedings.
Update On 11/10/2023 : In response to media queries, the Department of Corrections said on Thursday that Yee was readmitted on a parole violation.
