A Swedish tourist has been sentenced to five months and six weeks in jail after molesting three women in separate incidents, including two at a hotel on the same day and another while he was out on bail.
According to Straits Times, Jan Roger Mattias Ditlofsson, 58, pleaded guilty in a Singapore court to three charges of using criminal force to outrage the modesty of women. The identities of the victims and the name of the hotel involved were withheld due to a gag order protecting the victims’ identities.
According to court proceedings, Ditlofsson had arrived in Singapore on October 1, 2025, to attend the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix. Two days later, after consuming six or seven cans of beer, he entered a hotel restaurant where the first incident occurred.
First Incident at Hotel Restaurant
Ditlofsson approached a 47-year-old female chef who was setting up a buffet line and asked her where the swimming pool was located. After she answered his question, he suddenly kissed her twice on the left cheek.
The woman was outraged by the act and later reported the incident to her supervisor after completing her shift.
Second Incident the Same Day
Later the same day, Ditlofsson targeted a second victim at the buffet section of a restaurant in the same hotel.
The 60-year-old woman was filming the food display when he walked past her and grabbed her right breast. Shocked by the incident, the woman informed a friend who confronted Ditlofsson. Hotel staff subsequently alerted the police.
He was arrested on the same day.
Third Offence While on Bail
Despite being released on court bail for the first two incidents, Ditlofsson committed another offence at a different restaurant.
When a 23-year-old waitress approached him to ask if he wanted anything to drink, he introduced himself and extended his hand. Believing he wanted to shake hands, the waitress offered hers.
Instead, he kissed the back of her hand. The waitress immediately pulled her hand away and reacted angrily to the gesture.
During investigations, Ditlofsson admitted that he committed all three offences while drunk.
Prosecution and Defence Arguments
Deputy Public Prosecutor Joel Fun sought a jail term of six to eight months, arguing that the accused showed clear disregard for women’s dignity and personal autonomy.
“The accused’s conduct demonstrates a disregard for the personal autonomy and dignity of women, targeting victims who were simply carrying out their work duties or enjoying their time at hospitality establishments in Singapore,” the prosecutor told the court.
Defence lawyer Barry Douglas Delaney said that in parts of Europe it is customary to greet people with a kiss on the cheek, highlighting his client’s Swedish background.
However, he acknowledged that this cultural explanation did not excuse Ditlofsson’s actions after reviewing CCTV footage of the incidents.
The footage was not played in court.
Under Singapore law, those convicted of using criminal force to outrage a person’s modesty can face up to three years in jail, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments.
The court ultimately sentenced Ditlofsson to five months and six weeks’ imprisonment, according to ST.
