KEY HIGHLIGHTS :
- Sun Song, a 29-year-old Chinese national, was caught with 10 packs of cigarettes at Woodlands Checkpoint. She offered an ICA officer a bribe of at least $50 to avoid arrest, but the officer did not accept and reported the incident.
- Sun was sentenced to four weeks’ jail and paid a $650 fine for failing to declare the cigarettes and attempting to bribe a police officer.
DETAILS OF THE CASE
Sun, who traveled from Malaysia in a private-hire vehicle, was stopped around 6.40pm on November 23, 2024.
During a routine search, ICA officers identified a white plastic bag containing 10 packs of cigarettes beside her. When questioned, Sun did not verbally declare any items. The officers instructed the driver to pull over, and as the vehicle moved to the side of the road, Sun slipped the plastic bag into the car boot through the passenger seats.
‘Please’ ‘Help Me’
Sergeant (2) Nurliana Mohamad Sufian then opened the boot and found the cigarettes. The driver denied ownership of the items.
Meanwhile, Sun pleaded with the officers, saying “please” and “help me” in English, and then offered to pay at least $50 as a bribe, taking cash from her purse and proffering it to Sgt Nurliana. She claimed she was worried about being arrested and wanted to be allowed to go free.
The driver immediately grabbed Sun’s arm upon witnessing the bribe attempt. Sgt Nurliana warned her that her body-worn camera was recording.
ICA reported the incident to police at approximately 7pm that day, and the case was subsequently referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB). Sun was arrested on December 10, 2024.
In court, defense lawyer Foo Ho Chew argued that Sun was remorseful and that the bribe offer was of low value, only $50. He emphasized her cooperation with authorities during the investigation.
The court sentenced Sun to four weeks in jail and ordered her to pay a composition of $650 for failing to declare the cigarettes, which had been disposed of.
