A 36-year-old man, Tong He, has been sentenced to two months in jail in march for attacking a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) medic while drunk. The incident, which occurred on May 17, 2023, left the medic with a sprained neck.
According to court documents, Tong was found unconscious near an industrial building in Marymount and was deemed incapable of taking care of himself by the ambulance crew that arrived on the scene.
“While the ambulance crew was assessing the man after assisting him into the ambulance, he suddenly turned aggressive and tried to choke the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by grabbing his neck. The paramedic immediately intervened but the person continued his aggression, and tried to choke the EMT again despite attempts to calm him down” SCDF said in its statement on Facebook .
Despite being offered help, Tong became aggressive and uncooperative, throwing an ice pack at the medic, Mr Heinrich Ho.
During the ambulance ride to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Tong repeatedly tried to grab Mr Ho’s limbs and even managed to grab his neck for about three seconds. Mr Ho suffered a neck sprain as a result of the altercation.
Tong’s two-month jail term began on April 3, and the SCDF has warned the public against abusing its first responders. The SCDF stated that it takes such cases of abuse seriously and will not hesitate to report them to the police.
“Every emergency call matters to us and we will do our utmost to serve the public with the best of our abilities. However, physical or verbal abuse hinders our emergency responders from carrying out their duty”.
“SCDF does not take lightly such abuse to our emergency responders, and we will not hesitate to make a police report”, SCDF said in its statement.
