A foreign exchange student from Pakistan, Butt Muhammad Abdullah, aged 22, studying at the National University of Singapore (NUS), has been fined S$4,000 for outraging the modesty of a 30-year-old waitress.
According to CNA, the incident occurred during a night out at a nightclub in Singapore.
Butt Muhammad Abdullah, who holds a student pass and arrived in Singapore from Denmark on a five-month student exchange program with NUS, went to Marquee Singapore at Marina Bay Sands for a drinking session with friends on September 2, 2023.
WHAT HAPPENED
At approximately 2:50 am, as he was leaving the nightclub with a friend, Butt Muhammad Abdullah molested the waitress by touching her buttock over her clothing. The victim promptly confronted him and alerted security. The police were called, leading to Butt’s arrest.
The incident was captured on closed-circuit television cameras.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution sought a fine ranging from S$4,000 to S$5,000, considering that Butt Muhammad Abdullah had pleaded guilty and had no prior convictions.
The CCTV footage showed that the touch was “fleeting, over clothing” and did not intrude on private parts, as stated by the prosecutor.
In his defense, Butt Muhammad Abdullah’s lawyer, Cathy Pereira, highlighted that her client was an exchange student at NUS Business School and had been in Singapore for only a month before the night out. She emphasized that it was his first time consuming a substantial amount of alcohol, leading to his intoxicated state.
“He had only drunk once before. This time, he had seven drinks and didn’t realize the effect it had on him. He’s extremely remorseful,” stated Ms. Pereira according to the report.
She also mentioned that her client had acted impulsively during that moment.
Butt Muhammad Abdullah, who had already spent four nights in custody, was fined S$4,000, with the possibility of serving four days in jail in default if he fails to pay the fine.
The judge took into account the time spent in remand by the accused when calibrating the in-default imprisonment term. Media has contacted for further information, NUS has yet to provide details regarding the outcome of Butt Muhammad Abdullah’s exchange program.
