In recent enforcement operations carried out by officers from the Traffic Police (TP) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on July 28 and August 4, 2024, a total of 32 fines were issued to cyclists for violating the cycling group size rule.
As part of these initiatives, officers also engaged in outreach efforts to educate the public about cycling regulations and guidelines.
Cyclists found violating the cycling group size rule face a composition fine of $150.
This increased fine amount, aimed at enhancing road safety, has been in effect since January 1, 2022, and applies to other existing cycling violations as well.
This fine also applies to other cycling offenses, including failing to stop at red lights, cycling on expressways, and riding alongside another cyclist in single-lane roads or bus lanes during operational hours.
The Police in thier press release, urged all cyclists to adhere to the established cycling rules for their own safety as well as for the safety of all road users.
Key regulations include:
Obey Traffic Signals: Always follow traffic signals and ride in the same direction as traffic flow.
Wear Helmets: Cyclists are required to wear helmets while on the road.
Keep to the Left: Riders should maintain a position as close as possible to the far left edge of the road to allow overtaking traffic.
Single File Riding: Cyclists must ride in a single file on single-lane roads and during bus lane operational hours.
Use Lights: In low-light conditions, cyclists should activate front white and rear red lights.
Utilize Bicycle Lanes: Cyclists are encouraged to use designated bicycle lanes and avoid other parts of the roadway.
Group Riding Limits: When riding in groups, cyclists should limit their number to a maximum of 5 in single file or 10 when riding two abreast, only on roads with more than one lane.
No Mobile Devices: Cyclists must not use communication devices while riding.
Restricted Areas: Cycling is prohibited on expressways, road tunnels, and selected viaducts.
“TP and LTA will continue to conduct enforcement operations against errant cyclists and will not hesitate to take action against them” the enforcement agencies added in their press release.
