A man who drew attention on the streets of Geylang by dressing up as martial arts icon Bruce Lee and brandishing nunchucks has been sentenced to jail and fined for possessing prohibited weapons.
The incident came to light after a video circulated on Instagram page Sgfollowsall on Oct. 8, 2025.
In the clip, the man was seen wearing a bright yellow tracksuit with a black stripe down the side—resembling the outfit famously worn by Bruce Lee—while carrying a black backpack. He climbed onto two bollards and swung a pair of nunchucks as onlookers watched.
In the background, a passer-by could be heard calling him “Singapore’s Bruce Lee” in Mandarin, drawing laughter from others nearby. The man later stepped down and walked away as people cheered and applauded.
Following the video’s circulation, police stepped up patrols in the area. According to Shin Min Daily News, officers located the man, identified as Li, on Oct. 12 at Geylang Lorong 18. A search found him in possession of nunchucks, a five-pronged kunai (a Japanese-style weapon), and a pair of knuckledusters.
Li was arrested and charged with offences under the Firearms, Explosives and Weapons Control Act, as well as for possessing an offensive weapon. In court, he claimed he was unaware of Singapore’s strict weapons laws and said the items were meant for martial arts training and performances.
The prosecution countered that nunchucks are classified as a controlled weapon and that Li did not have the required licence to carry them. It was also argued that the kunai and knuckledusters were inherently dangerous and could be used to cause harm or instil fear.
Li eventually pleaded guilty to one charge. The court sentenced him to six months and two weeks’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of S$2,000.
