On February 14th, Muhammad Haikal Masai, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of rashly starting a fire.

According to CNA, the court was informed that Haikal, an operations manager, and his 47-year-old wife shared a flat in Tampines.

After discovering his wife was away when he arrived home in the early morning hours, the 33-year-old man called his wife and the two got into an argument.

On February 27 of last year, around 2am, the incident took place. He reportedly threatened to set the house on fire during the video call with his wife.

“Feeling angry afterwards, the man took a can of hairspray and lighter to set his wife’s wardrobe and clothes on fire, before making a video call to her”, CNA reported.

His wife requested assistance from the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

Before firefighters came, Haikal put out the fire after realising it was out of control and rushing to the kitchen to fetch some water.

At the scene, police and SCDF personnel discovered Haikal’s wife’s clothing as well as a badly burned wardrobe.

The wardrobe and the clothing’s damage was believed to have cost between $1,000 and $2,000, the court was informed.

Later this month, Haikal will return to court for sentencing and mitigation. He faces up to 18 months in prison, a fine, or both if found guilty of recklessly starting a fire.
