On March 15th, a Vietnamese migrant worker was sentenced to four months and seven weeks in jail for hitting his room-mate with a metal dumbbell rod.
Le Dong Hai, 31, pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt in the incident which took place on January 19th, CNA reported.
WHAT HAPPENED :
According to court reports, at around 10:20 pm, Le returned to his lodgings from work and entered the bedroom where his 34-year-old room-mate was sleeping.
He asked his room-mate about the location of his “rice cooker” but the other man replied that he didn’t know. Le left the room but returned shortly afterward and again asked his room-mate about the rice cooker’s location.
The man replied with the same answer, which enraged Le. He then proceeded to pick up a metal dumbbell rod that was about 29cm long and weighed about 2kg from the living room.
Le then entered the bedroom again and swung the rod at his room-mate, who was lying down facing the other way. The rod hit the victim on the head around his left ear, causing bleeding, a cut on his left ear, and bruising on the left side of his face. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries, CNA reported.
Le was arrested on January 20th, and when he appeared in court, he apologized for his actions and requested leniency.
The prosecution asked for a jail sentence of between four months and seven weeks, and five months and 10 weeks, citing the use of the metal dumbbell rod as a deadly weapon.
In delivering the sentence, the District Judge noted that the attack was unprovoked and occurred when the victim was lying down in a vulnerable position and was taken by surprise.
The judge sentenced Le to four months and seven weeks in jail.
