A 55-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges involving inappropriate behavior with his then 10-year-old daughter.
The man, whose identity is safeguarded by a court order to protect the victim, was found guilty of procuring an indecent act by a child or young person, as well as additional charges for obtaining and circulating obscene material to a minor and possessing obscene material.
DETAILS OF THE CASE :
The incidents occurred in 2019 while the man was living in a flat with his wife, parents-in-law, two sons, and the victim.
According to TODAY, he regularly consumed alcohol throughout the day. On one occasion, he asked his daughter to touch his genitals while he was intoxicated.
When she refused, he forcibly took her hand to comply with his request.
The man also exhibited pornographic videos from his phone to the victim on three to four occasions, despite refraining from showing such material to his two sons. Although feeling uncomfortable, the victim initially kept the incidents to herself before eventually reporting them to the police on February 10 of the previous year.
Police arrested the father the next day and discovered 140 obscene films on his mobile device.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Yohanes Ng asked for a prison sentence ranging from 18 to 24 months, stressing that the victim was just 10 years old at the time and was “particularly vulnerable”.
He also mentioned that there was some degree of coercion when the man took the victim’s hand to touch himself, the report added.
“The abuse of trust is particularly egregious as it is coming from a biological parent to a child,” DPP Ng stated, highlighting the psychological impact of the defendant’s actions on his daughter.
He mentioned that the man would spend less time in prison than the victim will endure living with the memories of her father.
DPP added ” “Having acted so callously against his own daughter to satisfy his own perverse desires, the accused must now bear the consequences of his actions.”
For procuring an indecent act by a child, the man could have faced up to five years in prison or a fine of up to S$10,000, or both. The outcomes for the other charges included potential jail time and fines as well.
