An Indonesian domestic helper was sentenced to a week’s jail on Oct 14 after admitting that she had filed a false police report accusing her employer’s husband of rape.
The woman, who cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the man’s identity, pleaded guilty to one charge of giving false information to a police officer, according to ST.
Court documents revealed that the family had hired the helper in May 2023 to care for their month-old son. The affair between the woman and her employer’s husband began in September 2024.
On Feb 25, the Indonesian national lodged a police report alleging that the man had sexually assaulted her more than once. She claimed that he would switch off the CCTV cameras in the flat before touching her inappropriately.
While at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for a medical examination that same day, the helper told a police officer that she had received extra “pocket money” ranging from $50 to $100 from the man.
However, she maintained that the sexual acts were non-consensual.
At about 10.30pm, police interviewed the man, who said that the sexual acts had been consensual.
The woman, who was being questioned in a separate room, later admitted at around 11pm that she had fabricated the allegations. She confessed that she lied because she felt guilty about the affair and wanted to end it.
The helper also suspected that the man’s wife was aware of their relationship and feared that she would lose her job if the truth came out.
In mitigation, her lawyer explained that the false report was made out of desperation to end the affair, emphasizing that she did not persist with the lie for long. The man was neither arrested nor placed on bail as a result of her report.
For giving false information to a public officer, an offender can be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
