A 61-year-old man has been sentenced to three weeks in jail for causing significant damage to a community facility while attempting to scare away birds that were disturbing his peace.
Lim Leong Sim admitted to using a homemade slingshot to fire glass marbles at a nearby tree where the birds were roosting, but instead struck a glass panel at the Zhenghua Community Club, resulting in S$29,000 in damages, as per the report.
The incident occurred on April 19 at approximately 5:30 PM, as Lim reportedly watched television in his flat. Annoyed by the incessant chirping from the trees across from his home, he took matters into his own hands, creating a slingshot from wood and launching marbles at the offending tree.
“The accused claimed that he heard some bird noises coming from the trees directly opposite his block area, and this annoyed him”, State Prosecuting Officer said in court according to the report.
However, Lim’s aim was off, and instead of hitting the birds, the marbles crashed through the windows of the nearby community club. The damage prompted a project coordinator working with the club’s contractor to alert the police.
On April 22, officers arrested Lim and seized several glass marbles, a receipt from a hardware store, and the slingshot he crafted.
In court, State Prosecuting Officer Ghopinath Kalimuthu described Lim’s actions as a rash act that endangered the lives and safety of others.
Lim faced a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment or a S$2,500 fine, or both, but ultimately received a shorter sentence of three weeks in jail after pleading guilty.
