In a shocking case, Teo Jun How, a 22-year-old man, has been sentenced to 15 months and four weeks’ imprisonment for committing sexual offenses against underage girls and possessing pornographic child abuse material.
According to the reports, Teo, who utilized WhatsApp and Instagram to connect with his victims, pleaded guilty to nine sexual offenses involving minors earlier this year, with the court considering thirteen additional charges during the sentencing process.
To protect the identities of the victims, who were between the ages of 11 and 15, the court has issued an order prohibiting their disclosure. The incidents occurred over a span of several years, from 2018 to 2021, shedding light on Teo’s predatory behavior towards young girls.
Secret Recordings
In one distressing encounter, Teo established contact with an 11 or 12-year-old girl through a WhatsApp chat group. While watching a movie together, he coerced her into engaging in a sexual act, which she adamantly refused.
However, Teo proceeded to expose himself, leaving the girl feeling furious and prompting her to abruptly leave the cinema. Expressing remorse, Teo subsequently apologized and offered to accompany her home, the report added.
While watching, Teo once again exposed himself to the girl and made an inappropriate request for her to touch him. Fortunately, the girl swiftly withdrew her hand, evading his advances. Regrettably, Teo’s predatory behavior did not cease there. Despite this, he repeatedly asked her to touch him but she declined.
As per the report, Teo repeatedly asked her to touch him but she declined. He got in touch with the girl, who was 13 at the time, around October 2020 and promised to pay her S$100 for her nude photos.
Teo proposed a video call and $150 in exchange for her showing him her privates when she declined.
Despite her refusal, Teo proposed a video call during which he offered her payment in return for displaying her private parts. Both parties engaged in exposing themselves during the call, unaware that Teo was secretly recording the interaction without the girl’s consent.
WhatsApp and Instagram
In a separate incident that occurred in January 2021, Teo contacted the 15-year-old sister of one of his previous victims, having obtained her contact information from the WhatsApp chat group.
In response to her inquiry about his identity, Teo responded by making inappropriate sexual noises. He proceeded to disclose the fact that her younger sister had sent him nude photos in exchange for money and even shared a screen recording of their conversation.
Troubled by this revelation, the 15-year-old sister immediately confided in her younger sibling, and their mother promptly filed a police report.
Further investigations into Teo’s activities revealed a history of sexual harassment targeted at young girls via social media platforms.
502 P*rnographic Videos Seized
In 2020, he sent sexually explicit messages and explicit content, including a video featuring an unidentified girl engaging in a sexual act with a male whom Teo claimed was himself, to two 15-year-old girls through Instagram. He also shared explicit images of his private parts with them.
Additionally, Teo joined a WhatsApp chat group named “cancelschool” in 2021, assuming the persona of a 15-year-old schoolboy called “Jia Le.” Within the group, he initiated contact with several victims aged between 12 and 14 at the time, engaging them in sexually explicit conversations and sharing explicit images of his genitalia.
Teo’s reprehensible actions were brought to an end on January 24, 2021, when he was arrested at his residence. During a search conducted by authorities, a thumb-drive containing 502 pornographic videos was seized.
Disturbingly, among the videos, 354 involved child sexual abuse content, featuring children aged 12 or younger. These videos, varying in length from a few seconds to 23 minutes, were acquired by Teo from various individuals through online messaging applications.
During the trial, defense lawyer Allison Foo appealed to the court to consider a probation report for Teo, citing his young age and potential for rehabilitation. However, District Judge Kessler Soh disagreed, stating that given the severity of Teo’s offenses, probation was an inadequate sentence.
The judge also highlighted that if Teo had committed these crimes at a younger age, he would have faced reformative training instead.
Teo’s crimes carry severe penalties. For sexual exposure to a person below 14 years of age, he could have faced a maximum sentence of two years in jail, a fine, or caning. For intending to insult the modesty of a person, he could have been liable for imprisonment of up to one year, a fine, or both. Possession of child abuse material could have resulted in a sentence of up to five years in jail, a fine, or caning. The exploitation of children or young persons can lead to a fine of up to S$10,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
