A 37-year-old man was arrested on the evening of August 10 after police were alerted to his possession of a chopper in a public area.
The incident occurred around 6:30 PM at 1 Vista Exchange Green, adjacent to the Buona Vista MRT station, where a National Day heartland celebration was underway, according to Lianhe Zaobao.
The Singapore Police Force said that the man was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and the chopper has been seized as evidence.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
This occurrence took place amidst one of five National Day events organized by the People’s Association in collaboration with the National Day Parade executive committee.
Police investigations are currently ongoing.
According to eyewitness accounts reported by LH, the man, described as tall and wearing a green shirt and blue jeans, was found during a security check at the entrance.
A photograph captured by attendees showed several police officers surrounding the man as they questioned him. He was found to be in possession of a kitchen knife measuring over 20 centimeters long, meticulously wrapped in paper and covered with plastic.
One unnamed source indicated that the man, believed to be an Indian construction worker, had queued to enter the venue. It was during the security screening that the staff discovered the knife he had on him, prompting them to immediately detain him and alert police.
The source added that the man remained calm throughout the encounter, displaying no signs of agitation or threatening behavior, and he did not brandish the knife at any time.
“Everyone was shocked. Fortunately, nothing serious happened; otherwise, with so many people around, the consequences could have been dire,” the source commented as per LH report.
Once police arrived, they took the man aside for questioning. The event continued without interruption, and the man left with the officers shortly thereafter.
In response to media inquiries, the police confirmed the arrest of a 37-year-old man for possessing an offensive weapon, and a kitchen knife was seized at the scene.
