A 33-year-old male secondary school teacher, accused of targeting three teenage girls in 2021, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to four charges under the Children and Young Persons Act.
According to ST, the teacher described by the prosecution as a “serial predator,” had engaged in inappropriate and sexual conduct with three victims, two of whom were former students.
Key Highlights of the Case:
- The teacher targeted three teenage girls in 2021, with the youngest still at his school, and attempted sexual acts with them, including at a hotel.
- He used social media platforms like Instagram and Telegram to send sexually suggestive messages and propositions, often leveraging “vanish mode” for privacy.
USED INSTAGRAM TO CONNECT WITH VICTIMS
The youngest victim, aged 15 at the time, was still enrolled at his school when he lured her to a hotel room, where he attempted to engage her in a sexual act. She refused and reported the incident.
The other two victims, aged 16 and 17, had already left the school when he contacted them via social media. He used Instagram’s “vanish mode” to send sexually suggestive messages, including propositions for sexual activities and “friends with benefits” arrangements, which they rejected.
According to ST report, DPP said : “Some time later that month, the accused attempted to procure the commission of an indecent act by the victim, who was 16 years old… by repeatedly suggesting to her that they become ‘friends with benefits’ – the implication being that they would meet regularly to engage in… sexual acts with each other.”
The teacher’s inappropriate conduct was uncovered after the victims confided in former teachers, prompting investigations.
Court documents revealed that he had taught the victims in Secondary 1 and Secondary 4 and had maintained a social media connection with them, often accepting “follow” requests. He contacted one victim in April 2021, asking about her studies and later suggesting sexual fantasies.
The other victim was approached in September 2021 with similar suggestive messages.
In October 2021, he arranged to meet the third victim at a hotel, where he attempted to kiss her and asked her to perform sexual acts. She pushed him away and did not comply.
After this incident, he drove her home but continued to send sexually charged messages, leading her to delete her Instagram account.
He left the school in December 2021, as per the report.
In early 2022, he contacted the third victim via Telegram to apologize, which prompted her to report the incidents to the school.
The third victim reported significant emotional and psychological distress, including difficulty forming relationships, depression, and reliance on sleeping pills, with her stress affecting her studies.
The teacher, who is no longer employed by the Ministry of Education (he ceased working in March 2022), was initially granted bail of $20,000 and is expected to begin his sentence on September 1.
The Ministry confirmed his departure from the teaching service following the incidents.
