Two teenage boys, aged 15 and 16, are assisting police with investigations into a fire that erupted at an open-air playground located at Block 308C Punggol Walk on the evening of August 30.
Authorities were alerted to the fire at approximately 9:40 PM, according to the Police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
The blaze, which involved vegetation and plastic pipes on the 14th floor, was reportedly extinguished by members of the public using buckets of water before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident according to Lianhe Zaobao.
Witnesses described hearing unusual noises coming from the playground area prior to the fire.
A 40-year-old resident, who observed the flames from her window, quickly alerted her neighbors. Together, they managed to contain the fire until emergency services arrived.
Concerns have been raised by residents regarding the area, which has been known to attract smokers at night. Local residents had previously expressed their worries about the risk of fires spreading to nearby homes and had escalated the issue to the town council. In response, the council placed a no-smoking sign at the playground; however, reports indicate that the situation has remained unchanged.
The police have stated that the two boys are being investigated for causing or contributing to the risk of a dangerous fire.
The official cause of the blaze is still under investigation, and authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in the area.
