Singapore Presidential Election 2023: Tharman Shanmugaratnam Emerges Victorious


The anticipation surrounding Singapore’s 9th Presidential Election has finally come to an end as the nation welcomes its newly elected president. In a closely watched contest, Mr. Ng Kok Song, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Mr. Tan Kin Lian were the candidates who vied for this prestigious position.

After a rigorous campaign period and with 1,746,427 votes in their favor, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam emerges victorious as Singapore’s 9th President. This 70% majority win demonstrates a strong mandate from the Singaporean electorate.

In a historic electoral victory, the 66-year-old former senior minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, has emerged as the clear winner in the presidential election, securing a commanding 70.4 percent of the total votes cast.

Tharman garnered an impressive 1,746,427 votes out of the 2,480,760 total votes cast for the presidential candidates. This resounding mandate reflects a strong endorsement from the electorate. It’s worth noting that there were 50,152 rejected votes, underscoring the significance of the election and the active participation of the voting population.

When asked about the significant turnout of supporters at the food center, Mr. Tharman attributed it to being an organic response. He explained, “People heard on the news that I was going to be conducting the doorstop here so they came down. I’ve been a long time in Jurong, and it is an emotional place.”

Mr. Tharman’s longstanding connection with Jurong is notable, having served as an MP for Jurong GRC since 2001. His dedication to the constituency and his experience in government positions over the years have undoubtedly shaped his deep connection with the community.
