In a recent island-wide anti-drug operation conducted by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), a total of 134 suspected drug offenders were apprehended.
The operation, which took place from October 8 to October 20, 2023, aimed at curbing the spread of illicit drugs in Singapore.
During the joint operation with the ICA, authorities successfully detected and seized approximately 8,960g of cannabis. Additionally, a significant quantity of various drugs was confiscated, including approximately 1,296g of heroin, 373g of ‘Ice’ (methamphetamine), 9,605g of cannabis, 1g of ketamine, 596g of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), 103 ‘Ecstasy’ tablets, 111 Erimin-5 tablets, three LSD stamps, and two bottles of GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate). These seized drugs have an estimated street value of around $606,000.
Among those arrested, two 14-year-old male individuals were the youngest offenders apprehended in this operation, according to CNB press release.
The operation covered various areas across the island, including Bedok, Clementi, Hougang, River Valley, and Tiong Bahru. This comprehensive approach ensured that no corner of Singapore was left unchecked, further reinforcing the commitment of law enforcement agencies in eradicating drug-related activities.
In a separate incident on October 8, acting on specific information, the Police arrested a 14-year-old boy for suspected drug offenses in a residential unit near Yishun Street 51.
The subsequent investigations led to the recovery of approximately 1g of ‘Ice’ and various drug paraphernalia. The case was then handed over to the CNB for further action.
Continuing their efforts, CNB officers conducted a follow-up operation later that evening, resulting in the arrest of another 14-year-old boy and his 22-year-old brother in a residential unit near Canberra Street. During the search, approximately 17g of ‘Ice’ and drug paraphernalia were seized.
On October 17, CNB officers raided a commercial unit near Serangoon North, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old Singaporean man and a 56-year-old Singaporean woman for suspected drug offenses. The raid yielded a significant seizure of approximately 979g of heroin, 250g of cannabis, and 19g of ‘Ice’. Subsequently, the authorities escorted the suspects to a residential unit near Woodlands Drive 62, where an additional 25g of heroin was seized.
Under Section 5 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, trafficking in controlled drugs or engaging in activities preparatory to trafficking is a serious offense. Offenders found guilty of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine or “pure heroin” may face the mandatory death penalty.
Investigations into all the arrested suspects are currently ongoing.
