Teen Convicted of Dangerous Driving and Theft After Accident and Burglary Spree

Azril Ryandi Kamalruzaman, an 18-year-old has been convicted of dangerous driving and housebreaking following a series of incidents, including a hit-and-run that left two pedestrians injured.

The court heard that on July 11, while delivering food, Azril ran a red light at the junction of Vista Exchange Green in Buona Vista, colliding with two individuals who were crossing with the green signal, according to Straits Times.

One of the victims, a 33-year-old woman in a wheelchair, suffered significant head injuries and was hospitalized for six days.

The other pedestrian, a 31-year-old woman from the Philippines, sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged on the same day.

Despite the accident’s severity, Azril fled the scene on his electric bicycle.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage captured from a nearby vehicle showed him speeding away as passers-by rushed to assist the victims.

In addition to the dangerous driving charge, Azril was also found guilty of housebreaking.

Between April and May, he broke into a minimart in Tiong Bahru on four separate occasions, stealing a total of $3,910 in cash and four packs of cigarettes. The stolen money was reportedly used to fund illegal gambling activities and to purchase parts for his unregistered electric bicycle.

During the proceedings, District Judge Carol Ling remarked on the gravity of Azril’s actions, which resulted not only in bodily harm to others but also reflected a pattern of criminal behavior involving theft.

As a result, she has called for a report to assess Azril’s suitability for reformative training, a punishment more severe than probation and which entails confinement in a reformative training center for 6 to 12 months. This option also carries the consequence of a criminal record.

Azril expressed remorse for his actions during the hearing and appealed for leniency, citing family difficulties. He faces a maximum fine of up to $10,000 and a jail term of up to two years for dangerous driving.

The housebreaking charges could lead to an additional 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon final sentencing, scheduled for September 23.
