In an alarming case of voyeurism, a 20-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months’ probation after taking secret photographs of male victims in public toilets across Singapore.
The young man, who cannot be named due to legal protections for minors, committed the offences between May and December 2021 when he was 17 to 18 years old.
He was sentenced to probation on Thursday (Aug 22).
According to CNA, the case came to light when a 39-year-old vigilant father, using a public toilet with his three-year-old son at Parkway Parade, caught the perpetrator in the act of photographing them from an adjacent cubicle.
TO EEXPERIENCE THE THRILL
The incident occurred on December 11, 2021, when the teenager held his mobile phone over the dividing wall to capture images of unsuspecting users.
This prompted the father to alert a nearby security guard, leading to the teenager’s detention and subsequent arrest by the police.
A search of the young man’s phone revealed a concerning collection of 101 images of 30 male victims, including the father and son.
The court learned that over a span of seven months, the teenager had taken 97 pictures of 28 different victims, driven by a desire to experience the “thrill” of his actions without a specific target in mind.
At the time of his crimes, the offender was a student working part-time at a shop in the same shopping complex, the report added.
As part of his sentencing, the teenager is prohibited from using any devices with cameras unless cleared by his probation officer.
Additionally, he must attend a treatment programme aimed at addressing his sexual offending behaviour and complete 60 hours of community service.
The court also ruled that he must remain indoors between 11 PM and 6 AM without prior permission.
To ensure compliance with his probation terms, his uncle and aunt-in-law have posted a bond of S$5,000.
