A guy named Rajama an Indonesian national, who was 18 at the time of the offence, was sentenced to eight years’ jail and six strokes of the cane on Monday (Aug 15).
According to Today, Rajama Samuel Doctorian Purba who is now 20 year old pleaded guilty in the High Court to one count of rape. One charge of outrage of modesty and another charge of possessing five obscene films on his mobile phone were taken into consideration for sentencing.
The victim was a 16-year-old secondary school student then. Her identity is protected by gag order.
The court heard that Rajama was pursuing a diploma in a private school in Singapore. He was renting a one-bedroom apartment at a Balestier condominium with another 19-year-old Indonesian teen.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED :
Rajama was enrolled in a private Singaporean school to get a diploma, the court was informed. In a Balestier condominium, he and another 19-year-old Indonesian teen were sharing a one-bedroom unit.
Acc to Today, the victim was invited to the apartment by a mutual male friend of Rajama’s roommate for a birthday celebration. She hesitated at first because she didn’t know anyone else attending the event, but she ultimately made up her mind to go.
On November 6, 2020, the group gathered in the living room to play cards and enjoy alcoholic beverages including whiskey and Jagermeister liqueur combined with Red Bull and Coca-Cola.
RAPED WHEN UNCONCIOUS
During the party, she started to feel lightheaded and informed the group she needed to vomit.
Rajama led her to the bathroom in his bedroom and closed the door behind them. She threw up in the toilet, and he cleaned it up. He realised she was unconscious at that point, the court was told.
He became sexually aroused, brought her to his bed and groped her chest. When she did not react, he raped her, according to the report.
At this point, the victim was drifting in and out of consciousness, but due to her intoxication, she was unable to move or resist, according to Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kavita Uthrapathy.
After some time, Rajama stopped hitting the victim, clothed her, and took her to the After some time, Rajama stopped his assault, dressed the victim and took her to the toilet where she vomited once more. He then left the bedroom and rejoined the other men in the living room.
Later, his roommate used the bathroom in the bedroom. Rajama was then reprimanded for showing disrespect by leaving the victim in such a state on the bathroom floor.
In response, Rajama confessed to his roommate about having sexual intercourse with the victim in a drunken state. They then returned to the living room and continued to drink.
The victim and her friend took a private-hire car back to his flat, where she told him Rajama had violated her. She also confided in her ex-boyfriend after returning home and being unable to stop thinking about what Rajama had done.
LODGED POLICE REPORT
The victim lodged a police report on her ex-boyfriend’s advice. Rajama was arrested on Nov 8, 2020 at his apartment and has been remanded since. Five obscene films were found in his possession.
The victim was assessed at the Institute of Mental Health’s Child Guidance Clinic where she was assessed to have mild psychological distress. She told psychologists there that she tried to struggle during Rajama’s assault but was too weak to stop him.
DPP Uthrapathy sought seven to 10 years’ jail and six strokes of the cane, arguing that Rajama took advantage of the victim to gravely violate her and expose her to the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Rajama’s defence counsel, Mr Nasser Ismail, told the court that he was remorseful and had intended to plead guilty from an early stage.
For each count of rape and sexual assault by penetration, the man could have been jailed up to 20 years and been fined or caned. Each count of outrage of modesty carries a punishment of up to two years’ jail, fine, caning or a combination of any of these punishments.
