A man in Singapore has been sentenced to two years in jail and a 10-year driving ban after he ran a red light and collided with a teenager, resulting in the latter’s death.
Firhan Aqil Mohamad Amran, 25, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing death of a 14-year-old who died three weeks after accident.
The incident took place on October 10, 2022, as the 14-year-old victim was returning home from school during the examination period when school hours are shorter. While crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing along Sumang Walk towards Sumang Link, the victim stopped at a red signal for pedestrians.
Error Of Judgment
When the traffic light signal turned to a green man, indicating that pedestrians could proceed, the victim began crossing. Simultaneously, Firhan, who was driving towards his father’s home, failed to obey the red light and collided with the teenager, throwing him a considerable distance away.
Firhan immediately stopped his car after feeling the impact, while a witness nearby rushed to check on the boy. The witness found the teenager bleeding from his ears and unresponsive.
The victim was quickly transported to Sengkang General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and sadly passed away on November 2, 2022.
As per the report, Firhan’s defense lawyer, Justin Ng Cho Yang, requested that his client receive the mandatory minimum punishment of two years in jail and a 10-year driving ban.
Mr. Ng argued that Firhan had cooperated fully with authorities during the investigation, pleaded guilty early, and showed genuine remorse.
Describing Firhan’s actions as an “error of judgment” rather than a conscious risk, Mr. Ng explained that the accused mistakenly believed that a green traffic light at a further junction meant he had the right of way. However, the traffic light at the location of the accident was red when the collision occurred.
The defense lawyer also highlighted that Firhan had a clean driving record.
Mr. Ng stated, “The accused sincerely apologises to the victim’s family and hopes that they will find closure,” further emphasizing that Firhan recognizes that he can never adequately make up for the tragic loss.
The charge of dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum sentence of eight years’ imprisonment.
