A violent altercation broke out at Concorde Shopping Mall along Orchard Road in the early morning hours of August 20, 2023, resulting in the tragic death of one individual.
According to reports from the Shin Min Daily News, the altercation involved more than 10 individuals and quickly escalated into a violent clash.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) was promptly dispatched to the scene to investigate the matter. Upon their arrival, two men, aged 23 and 29, were found with severe injuries sustained during the brawl.
Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the 29-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries after being conveyed unconscious to the hospital. The 23-year-old victim, however, was conveyed conscious to the hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the incident, highlighting the widespread commotion caused by the fight. A security guard at the Concorde Shopping Mall disclosed to Shin Min that the area had been a hotspot for disturbances, often involving individuals who had consumed alcohol. He mentioned that the police had been called on multiple occasions due to such incidents.
He also told the media that the police requested CCTV footage from the hotel.
An employee of a catering company, who arrived at the scene around 6 am, reported a significant police presence, with numerous police cars and officers working diligently to manage the situation.
The employee revealed that the area surrounding the Concorde Shopping Mall had a reputation for frequent altercations due to the presence of bars in the vicinity, according to Shin Min.
The Concorde Hotel, which shares its premises with the Concorde Shopping Mall, issued a clarification statement emphasizing that the incident occurred within the shopping mall premises, which falls outside their management jurisdiction. The hotel confirmed that the incident took place at around 6 am and that the SPF responded to an alert regarding a fight involving deadly weapons.
The SPF subsequently arrested 13 men and one woman, aged between 22 and 32, in connection with the incident. The individuals are suspected of being involved in rioting armed with deadly weapons, highlighting the severity of the altercation and the aggressive behavior displayed by those involved.
