A domestic helper was sentenced to 23 days in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting a three-year-old non-verbal autistic girl under her supervision. The incident occurred while the child was at a childcare center, where the helper was tasked with ensuring the child’s well-being.
The helper, identified only as Widiyanti, 32, was employed by the child’s mother in September 2024 to care for her daughter, who had been diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay. The mother, seeking additional support for her child, enrolled her at a childcare center and assigned Widiyanti to supervise her during this time, according to ST report.
On November 20, 2024, around 1 PM, Widiyanti attempted to coax the child to sleep during scheduled nap time.
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Ryan Lim, the child was reluctant to settle down, repeatedly sitting up, tossing and turning, and trying to engage with the helper for approximately 15 minutes.
In an effort to force the child to sleep, Widiyanti pinched the toddler’s left thigh three times. Following the assault, the child became more compliant and eventually fell asleep. However, later that evening, the child’s mother noticed bruises on her daughter’s thigh and confronted Widiyanti about the marks.
The helper admitted to the assault, prompting the mother to contact the police.
Officers arrested Widiyanti the following day. Under the law, she could have faced a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a fine for the assault. However, she was sentenced to 23 days in jail.
