A Myanmar maid was sentenced to nine months in jail for the brutal beating of a dog owned by her employer’s boyfriend, leading to the animal’s death.
The video of dog abuse went viral in January this year.
Junny Lal Awm Pui, 26, pleaded guilty to three charges under the Animals and Birds Act, including two counts of cruelly beating an animal and one count of causing unnecessary pain and suffering.
As per the report, District Judge Ow Yong Tuck Leong, during the sentencing, acknowledged that while Junny was following her employer’s instructions to discipline the dog, named Boyboy, she had failed to control her strength, resulting in severe harm to the animal.
A report from two veterinarians indicated that Boyboy, a 15-year-old poodle, endured significant pain and suffering, likely suffering traumatic injuries from the forceful blows to its head.
According to court documents, Junny was directed by her employer, Heng, to restrict Boyboy’s movements and isolate him from her two other dogs.
On January 22, 2024, after the dog began eating its food before being given permission, Junny acted on Heng’s orders and physically restrained Boyboy, hitting him multiple times with her hands and a makeshift rod, which was made from rolled-up pet food packaging.
Video evidence revealed disturbing details of the abuse.
At one point, Junny hung Boyboy from the balcony railing by its harness to expose it to the sun, a method purportedly intended to mitigate the dog’s odor. The prosecution noted that while the dog appeared limp during the incident, it had succumbed to the injuries inflicted upon it.
After Heng instructed Junny to check on Boyboy later that day, the maid discovered the dog in distress, bleeding and biting its tongue. The dog was found dead shortly after, with no signs of respiration. Veterinary assessments confirmed that the repeated beatings were the cause of death.
Following the incident, Heng arranged for Boyboy’s body to be cremated without initially informing the owner, Lai, who later became suspicious and reported the matter to authorities after reviewing video footage.
In a tearful court appearance, Junny expressed remorse for her actions, stating: “I’m sorry for my cruel and brutal treatment of Boyboy.” She also shared her concerns about her family’s safety in Myanmar, where they reside in a conflict-afflicted area.
It is not clear yet, if any action is being taken against Heng for her role in the dog’s demise.
NParks prosecuting officers Lee Zu Zhao and Farisha Asharaff reported that Boyboy was picked up from Rochor Road by its owner, referred to as Lai, and his former girlfriend in January 2015. After unsuccessfully searching for the original owner, they adopted the dog but broke up in 2018.
Following Lai’s new relationship with Heng, they kept Boyboy at Heng’s home starting July 5, 2023. Heng instructed Junny Lal Awm Pui to confine Boyboy to the balcony and to feed it separately from her other two dogs.
On January 22, 2024, after filling Boyboy’s food bowl around 10 a.m., Junny Lal Awm Pui observed that the dog began eating before being allowed to do so, which led her to follow Heng’s order to hit the dog.
