Man In Singapore Sentenced to Jail After Attempting to Hide Drugs Outside State Courts

A 35-year-old man, Sajan Oberoi, was sentenced to one year and 10 weeks’ jail on Friday (Mar 7) for a series of offences, including possessing methamphetamine, after he was caught placing a packet of drugs in the bushes outside the State Courts.

DETAILS OF THE CASE :

According to Channel News Asia, Sajan, an Indian national and Singapore Permanent Resident, intended to pick up the packet containing no less than 1.17g of methamphetamine, a straw, and three pieces of aluminium foil after attending a pre-trial conference for other charges.

The court heard that on October 24, 2023, Sajan consumed methamphetamine at home before heading to the courts.

Witnesses reported seeing Sajan deposit the items in the bushes, leading to his arrest by police officers around 1:45 PM. It was revealed that the drugs were meant for his own consumption.

In addition to the drug-related charges, Sajan pleaded guilty to several other offences. He admitted to hitting a 35-year-old man on the side of his head with a beer bottle during an altercation at a bar in Boat Quay on August 17, 2024, the report added.

The victim, who was intoxicated, had approached Sajan to shake hands and make a deal regarding Sajan’s behavior towards the man’s female friend. When Sajan refused and threatened violence, he followed through, resulting in a 1.5cm laceration on the victim’s head.

Furthermore, Sajan was charged with stealing bottles of Monkey Shoulder whisky and Maker’s Mark bourbon from Cold Storage Supermarket at Raffles City later that month, where he was apprehended by a loss prevention officer.

In 2023, Sajan also faced charges for molesting a 35-year-old woman working as a server at a bar, kissing her on the left temple when she leaned in to hear him better.

The prosecution sought a sentence of 1 year and 10 to 12 weeks’ jail for Sajan, who has a prior conviction for violent offences from September 2023, for which he was fined a total of S$18,500.

In total, Sajan pleaded guilty to five charges, two of which involved drug offences, while another 15 charges, including drug offences, criminal intimidation, and using criminal force, were taken into consideration during sentencing.
