A student from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has been sentenced to six years’ jail and five strokes of the cane after he was found with more than 100g of cannabis on campus grounds.
According to the report, he had plans to pass it to at least one other person.
Muhammad Izzat Mazlan, 25, was arrested in 2022 at a carpark at the institution. Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) found the drug in his motorcycle parked nearby.
CNB officers discovered four blocks of “vegetable matter” wrapped in clear plastic during a search of Izzat’s motorcycle. They then accompanied him to his residence where they found five more blocks of the same substance.
Analysis by the Health Sciences Authority revealed that the substance in his motorcycle contained a minimum of 101.59g of cannabis, the report added.
DPP Lim stated that Izzat acquired the drug from a supplier with the intention of distributing it to at least one individual. The substance found in his home contained a minimum of 132.19g of cannabis, with a portion reserved for Izzat’s personal use. Izzat confessed to smoking cannabis approximately four times a week since the beginning of 2021.
DPP said that “He claims to have obtained his recent supply from an individual in Singapore whom he got to know through mutual friends”.
In sentencing Izzat, District Judge Crystal Tan noted his clean record and relatively young age. Five other charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act were taken into consideration during his sentencing.
Izzat pleaded guilty to three drug-related charges and received the mandatory minimum sentence for trafficking a controlled drug on May 8. He was also sentenced to one year’s jail for smoking cannabis and imprisonment of two years and six months for possession of cannabis, which was found in his home. The court ordered the sentence for possession to run concurrently with the other two charges. Five other charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act were taken into consideration during his sentencing.
In response to queries from ST, an NTU spokesperson said the university will commence disciplinary proceedings and review Izzat’s candidature following the conclusion of the court case.
“The University takes a serious view of students engaging in criminal activities.
“Students who are found guilty by the courts will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from the University, depending on the nature and severity of the offence.”
