A 38-year-old driver involved in a fatal accident in Chinatown that claimed the life of a six-year-old girl and injured the child’s mother will be formally charged on April 8.
In a statement issued on April 7, police confirmed that the woman will be charged with driving without due care and attention, causing the death of the young girl. She will also face a separate charge of driving without due care and attention, causing grievous hurt to the girl’s 31-year-old mother.
The victims, both from Indonesia, were in Singapore on holiday at the time of the incident.
Authorities said they were alerted to the accident on Feb 6 at around 11.50am along Spring Street, near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.
The driver was arrested at the scene.
The child, identified as Sheyna Lashira Smaradiani, was taken unconscious to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Her remains were repatriated to Indonesia on the morning of Feb 8 and she was buried later that same day in South Jakarta.
Her mother, Ms Raisha Anindra Pascasiswi, was also taken to the hospital following the accident and has since been discharged. Earlier, the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore stated that Ms Raisha had been seriously injured and was receiving intensive medical care at Singapore General Hospital.
Under the law, those convicted of driving without due care and attention causing death may face a jail term of up to three years, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
For causing grievous hurt, offenders may be jailed for up to two years, fined up to $5,000, or both. In addition, the offender may be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.
The Traffic Police said it takes a serious view of motorists who drive carelessly and endanger lives.
“All motorists are urged to abide by traffic rules to keep our roads safe for everyone. TP will continue to take firm action against errant motorists,” police added.
