A 35-year-old Indian national has been sentenced to six months in jail after molesting a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member and later intimidating her during a flight to Singapore.
The offender, identified as Akash Tiwari, was travelling with four friends when the incidents took place. Court proceedings revealed that the group had been behaving in a disruptive manner, reportedly waving at female crew members and laughing whenever they passed by their seats.
The first incident occurred before take-off when a flight attendant approached the group to confirm meal preferences. During the interaction, Tiwari allegedly stretched out his arm and made inappropriate physical contact with the crew member. The victim was shocked by the act, while Tiwari and his companions reportedly laughed.
Following the encounter, the crew member informed her supervisor and was advised to avoid serving the aisle where Tiwari was seated. However, a second incident occurred later while she was collecting meal trays.
As the flight attendant pushed a service cart through the cabin, Tiwari deliberately leaned out from his seat and made further inappropriate contact with her. The victim immediately objected and told him not to touch her. Instead of apologising, he reportedly smirked, causing further distress.
One of Tiwari’s friends allegedly laughed and remarked that he would like to have a beer and watch the “show,” referring to the victim’s reaction.
According to CNA, the victim subsequently reported the matter to the chief flight stewardess, who accompanied her to confront Tiwari. He reportedly denied any wrongdoing and remained unapologetic.
As the aircraft began preparing for landing, the victim went to the galley area to provide further details about the incident. Tiwari followed her into the confined space, where he allegedly stood extremely close to her despite repeated requests to stay away.
Feeling frightened and cornered, the flight attendant shouted at him to stop following her and moved back towards the passenger cabin. Passengers in the aisle witnessed part of the confrontation.
The victim later sought assistance from senior crew members while visibly distressed, trembling and in tears. The aircraft captain was informed of the situation and alerted authorities on the ground before landing.
A police report was lodged after the flight arrived at Changi Airport, leading to Tiwari’s arrest. He later pleaded guilty to one charge of molestation and another charge of causing distress through threatening behaviour.
In addition to the six-month jail sentence, the court ordered Tiwari to pay approximately S$1,270 in compensation to the victim for emotional trauma and medical expenses.
