A 35-year-old woman who falsely accused her former boyfriend of rape after a consensual sexual encounter has been sentenced to five weeks’ jail.
Liau Wan Ting, a food delivery rider, admitted to providing false information to the police after making a rape allegation against her ex-boyfriend, identified in court documents as A1.
The pair met through TikTok in 2024 and began dating later that year. Although they ended their relationship in October 2025, they remained friends and continued to have sexual relations.
According to court proceedings, Liau contacted A1 at about 1am on Jan 7, 2026, after drinking with friends and asked him to pick her up. He arrived on his personal mobility device, and the pair later ate at a coffee shop before heading to his home around 4am.
There, they showered together and had sex. The court heard that the encounter was consensual.
About an hour later, A1 woke his child for school. After leaving the child with a school bus operator, he and Liau went for breakfast in Yishun.
Later that evening, Liau called her sister-in-law and asked whether sex with someone who was not her partner could amount to rape. Her sister-in-law explained the concept of consent, and Liau acknowledged that she understood the difference between consensual sex and rape.
Despite this, she told her sister-in-law that she had been raped. Acting on the advice she received, Liau later went to Yishun Neighbourhood Police Centre and lodged a police report.
She repeated the allegation to three police officers before eventually admitting the truth while giving a statement to a fourth officer. Liau later acknowledged that the sexual encounter had been consensual.
Investigations revealed that Liau’s birth control patch had expired the day before the encounter. She feared that A1 would not take responsibility if she became pregnant, which contributed to her decision to make the false allegation.
She also told investigators that she continued maintaining the lie because she was afraid of being jailed for making a false report.
During sentencing submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kimberly Boo described false rape allegations as “particularly egregious”.
She told the court: “False allegations of rape are particularly egregious as they not only waste public resources and cause distress to innocent persons but also do a grave disservice to genuine victims of sexual assault, whose accounts may consequently be met with unwarranted scepticism.”
The prosecution noted that false accusations can have severe consequences for innocent individuals while diverting law enforcement resources from legitimate investigations.
Liau was sentenced to five weeks’ imprisonment on June 12.
Under Singapore law, those convicted of providing false information to a public servant can face up to two years in jail, a fine, or both.
